I just read an article about fake degree scams that made me think. Who are the people that are targeted? It cant be your average college student or graduate student, but then again maybe so.
It seems that these scammers are getting a little more sophisticated and now they can duplicate official documents of major universities. So the next question poses “How do I know if I’m getting scammed?”. You should look out for the obvious first:
- Never fill out information from a school asking for billing information without talking to the finacial aid office first.
- Never give them your social security number without first talking to a real person in admissions or another legitimate department.
- Try to establish a relationship somewhere in the school first
And if the school is an online school, at least try to confirm the validity of the school by calling, requesting brochures, and being a pester. This could honestly save your identification.
